Automation support for UK food and FMCG production.

Most of our work is on food and FMCG sites: lines from half a dozen machine builders, twenty-year-old PLCs running next to new ones, annual certification audits and engineering teams already running lean. We keep those lines documented, supported and staffed.

The situations we see most on food sites.

  • The Friday afternoon fault

A line stops at four o’clock. The engineer who knows that PLC is on holiday and nobody can find the backup. With the program, software version and cable already recorded, any authorised engineer can pick it up, on site or through Connect.

    Connect remote support →
  • The audit question nobody can answer

An auditor or customer asks how you would recover a control program, or which version is running on the line that enforces a critical control point. Versioned backups and a change log answer it on the day, not the night before.

  • The drive nobody planned for

A drive on a critical line has been discontinued, and the site finds out when the supplier says it can’t be ordered. Lifecycle status on every device shows it while there is still time to buy spares or plan the change.

    Parts lifecycle index →
  • The engineer who left

Someone leaves and takes the knowledge of three lines with them. A Capture audit puts that knowledge on record, device by device, before it walks out of the door.

    How Capture works →
  • Six machine builders, six contracts

A filler from one builder, a wrapper from another, a palletiser from a third. Each OEM support contract stops at the edge of its own machine. One Connect subscription covers the whole line, whoever built each part of it.

  • Peak season with a lean team

Christmas and seasonal peaks stretch engineering teams already running lean. Shift Hero engineers, vetted by engineers, cover shifts and breakdowns so the peak isn’t the time a line goes down for days.

Every device on the line, on record.

Command Centre organises the estate the way your site is laid out: site, area, line, machine, device. Each device carries its part number, firmware, program backups and lifecycle status, so the person fixing it at 2am starts with the facts.

What auditors and customers are asking about.

Food sites answer to certification bodies, retail customers and, increasingly, cyber rules. The ones moving fastest for food and FMCG right now: last reviewed 19 October 2026

PAS 96 (food defence)

Guidance

Revised by BSI in July 2026, with more emphasis on cyber-enabled threats.

Food and drink businesses. It is the guide most sites use for the threat assessment BRCGS asks for.

What helps. Knowing which controllers run critical control points, which version is approved, and who can change or access them.

BRCGS Food Safety Issue 10

Certification scheme

In development. Issue 9 remains current.

BRCGS-certified food sites. Automation and digitalisation are among the topics the working group is considering.

What helps. Controlled, versioned changes to the programs that enforce critical control points.

NIS2 Directive

EU law

In force across the EU, through each member state’s own law.

Medium and large food producers, processors and distributors operating in the EU, as “important entities”. Not UK law, but it reaches UK groups with EU sites, and EU customers pass its supply-chain duties down to suppliers.

What helps. Asset inventory, versioned backups, access and change logs, controlled remote access.

Machinery Regulation 2023/1230

EU law

Replaces the Machinery Directive. GB keeps recognising CE marking and the government plans to update GB machinery rules.

Machines placed on the EU market. New requirements cover protection against corruption and cyber-attack, protecting safety-related software, and logging interventions.

What helps. Program versions and an intervention log for the machines you build, modify or retrofit.

Questions from food and FMCG sites

Does BRCGS require PLC program backups?

Not in those words. BRCGS Food Safety Issue 9 does not mention PLCs. But on most lines the PLC enforces critical control points, and the standard expects changes to how they are controlled to be managed and the site to be able to recover. Versioned backups and a change log are the practical way to show that.

Does NIS2 apply to UK food manufacturers?

Not in Great Britain. NIS2 is EU law. It covers medium and large food producers, processors and distributors operating in the EU, so it applies to UK groups with EU sites, and EU customers pass its supply-chain duties on to their UK suppliers.

Does a Capture audit stop production?

No. Capture does not scan your network, and the visit is planned around your production schedule. Most sites take one to three days, depending on the number of lines and devices.

Can Connect support a line built by several machine builders?

Yes. Connect covers the PLCs and automation across the whole line, whichever builder supplied each machine, across Siemens, Rockwell, Mitsubishi, Omron and other platforms.

Can ECS cover engineering shifts over Christmas and seasonal peaks?

Yes. Shift Hero provides vetted electrical, mechanical and multi-skilled engineers for peak periods, shift gaps and breakdowns, for short or longer-term cover.

Start with what’s on the line.

A Capture audit records every device, takes the backups and checks lifecycle status in one visit. Or talk to us about cover, support or a project.
